George A. Brakeley Jr., a national leader in the philanthropic and fundraising consulting communities, died of natural causes on May 1, 2009 in Naples, FL, at the age of 93. He had lived in Bonita Springs, FL, for four years and earlier in Darien and New Canaan, CT.
Born in Washington, D. C. in 1916, he was the son of the late George A. Brakeley Sr. and Lillian Fay. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia and was a 1938 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. A World War II veteran, he served in China and Indo China with the Corps of Engineers, leaving the service as a Captain.
During his long career as a philanthropic fundraising consultant in the United States and Canada, he was an innovator in philanthropy and fundraising, a leading spokesman for the consulting profession, and a founder of the then-American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel (now the Giving Institute). His career began with John Price Jones, Inc., of New York City, which was known at his retirement in 1983 as Brakeley, John Price Jones (today Brakeley Briscoe, Inc.). He also founded firms bearing his name in Canada and on the West Coast.

Founder & President
Gail L. Freeman is Founder and President of Freeman Philanthropic Services, L.L.C., a full-service firm offering a broad range of services including fund-raising consulting, training, and executive search for leading not-for-profit organizations nationwide. As a recognized leader in the not-for-profit field, Ms. Freeman brings more than twenty-five years of experience in executive recruitment. Her broad experience and multi-faceted knowledge base bring a complete perspective to the Firm’s numerous clients. Throughout her career, Ms. Freeman has worked in a variety of capacities in the not-for-profit field. Prior to the establishment of her namesake firm, Ms. Freeman served as Vice President and Director for a national retained executive search firm, where she led the Development & Institutional Advancement practice. In this capacity, she managed all aspects of the search process, including client relationships, research, networking, qualification, and final selection of candidates.
Derek C. Bellin has recruited over 225 advancement, finance, marketing and communications professionals across the higher education, research, healthcare, advocacy and community development sectors. With Freeman Philanthropic Services since 2005, he has facilitated recruitment of executive leadership for Brandeis University, Brown University, Columbia University, Harvard School of Public Health, Sarah Lawrence College, Stevens Institute of Technology and Tufts University. Kevin Clark specializes in executive recruitment for the not-for-profit sector, successfully recruiting top leadership for national and international institutions of higher education, cultural organizations, hospitals, social service and advocacy groups. Mr. Clark works on all aspects of the search with a strong concentration on position profile development, candidate references, and interviewing. Previously, Mr. Clark worked in the not-for-profit sector for a biomedical research institution. He has also served on the junior committee of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution and is an interior designer. His broad knowledge and service within the sector brings a vast network of resources to his clients: The New School, Harlem Children’s Zone, Marymount Manhattan College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Hole In The Wall Gang (founder, Paul Newman), Baby Buggy (founder, Jessica Seinfeld), Connecticut College and The New School Parsons Paris. Mr. Clark has also written and edited a number of coffee table books on all areas of design.
Iva Popovicova-Colter has worked for a number of executive search firms specializing in the not-for-profit sector in the New York City area. She has experience in identifying, sourcing, developing, and interviewing candidates for senior executive positions in the sector, with particular expertise in higher education.
Kelly A. Concar is a seasoned Administrative and Project Manager whose background includes years of direct interface with senior executives, board members, clients and investors.
Prior to joining Freeman Philanthropic Services, Kelly spent nine years working at Merrill Lynch in various roles within Global Philanthropy, Organizational Leadership and Development, and Executive Administration. She has held responsibility for managing global programs with young entrepreneurs in underserved communities, creating and managing development programs, web design, training and performance management, as well as budgeting and expense controls, staff supervision, recruiting, operations for special events, and all aspects of administrative management.
Kathy DeCoursey has been conducting reference checks for Freeman Philanthropic Services since 2007. Her prior experience includes twenty-five years with an executive search firm involved in conducting searches at high levels in all industries. She also served for three and a half years as Office Manager for a private equity investment firm with over $1 billion of capital under management. Her volunteer work includes serving as a kitchen worker for God’s Love We Deliver.
Ann Jeffrey has provided networking, recruiting and reference checking services to FPS since 2005. Current searches include Associate Dean for Resource Development for Harvard School of Public Health, Vice President for Institutional Advancement for Pratt Institute, Vice President of Philanthropy for World Learning, and Vice President Strategic Marketing and Development for John Jay College, among others. Ann has more than 25 years of experience as an executive recruiter and holds an MSW from Washington University in St. Louis. She received the 2005 Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC) Award for Excellence and Professionalism in Research.
Tara J. Maroney is a research specialist and consultant with Freeman Philanthropic Services, a national executive search firm headquartered in New York City. Since joining the firm in 2007, Ms. Maroney has worked on multiple research projects for the not-for-profit sector with a focus on higher education, hospitals, social services and advocacy programs.
Carmel Napolitano started working on executive search projects with Freeman Philanthropic in 2003 and has participated in over 100 successful searches including the President, Palomar Pomerado Healthcare Foundation; Executive Director, Little Sisters of the Assumption Health Service; President, Better Business Bureau of New York; the Executive Director for the Union Square Partnership; President, Tuesday’s Children; and the Executive Director of the American Hospital of Paris Foundation.
Tara M. Reese is the Director of Production for Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC, a national leader in executive recruitment for the not-for-profit sector, specializing in recruiting leaders for higher education institutions, hospitals, academic medical centers, social service, cultural, performing arts, and advocacy organizations.
Linda N. Spencer is a Senior Consultant with Freeman Philanthropic Services who has spent the majority of her career in leadership positions in the not-for-profit sector, both on staff in senior positions in prestigious New York and international non-profits or as a consultant. Her experience includes extensive board management and development with top executives and CEOs from Fortune 500 companies, strategic planning, marketing and fundraising. During the course of her career, she has been responsible for effecting anywhere between $10 million to $60 million dollars in annual revenue in development and consistently has exceeded her institutional goals.
